What the Predictive Index actually tests
Predictive Index sells two separate instruments, and job listings that mention "the PI test" are usually talking about one or the other, or both.
The PI Behavioral Assessment is a free-choice questionnaire. You pick adjectives that describe how others see you and how you see yourself, and it maps you onto four behavioral drives (dominance, extraversion, patience, and formality) to produce one of roughly 17 reference profiles. There's no time limit and no right answer.
The PI Cognitive Assessment is the timed one, and it's what this page's practice test is modeled on. It's 50 multiple-choice questions covering verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning, and abstract reasoning, and you get 12 minutes to answer as many as you can, no calculator. That works out to about 14 seconds a question, which is the entire reason people search for practice tests before they sit down for the real one. Extended-time versions (18 and 24 minutes) exist as accommodations.
What Predictive Index costs
PI doesn't list prices on its site. You request a demo, and pricing gets quoted based on how many employees you have and whether you're buying just the Behavioral Assessment or the full talent optimization platform (design, hiring, and performance tools bundled together).
Independent estimates from software marketplaces put small-business pricing in the low thousands of dollars a year for basic behavioral assessment access, climbing into the tens of thousands annually for mid-market companies that add the full suite, and into six figures for large enterprise deployments with consulting attached. Multi-year contracts reportedly negotiate below list price. None of this is official, so confirm current numbers directly with Predictive Index before budgeting around them.
For a business with five to a hundred people hiring for a handful of recurring roles, that's a lot of software for a signal that's one part of a much bigger screening decision.
Should a timed cognitive test decide who you hire
General cognitive ability is one of the more studied predictors in employment testing, and it correlates with performance across a wide range of jobs. That's a real finding, and it's why PI, Criteria, and similar vendors built businesses around it.
It's also a narrow one. A 12-minute timed multiple-choice test tells you how someone performs on a 12-minute timed multiple-choice test. It doesn't show you how someone communicates, how they'd actually handle the job's real problems, or what their resume and work history say about whether they'll show up and do the work. Treat a cognitive score as one input into a bigger picture, not the picture itself.
A modern alternative, built for the business without a recruiter
Most vendors in this space were built for a company with an HR team to run the assessment, interpret the norm-referenced score, and fold it into a formal hiring process. If you're the owner, GM, or franchisee doing your own hiring on top of the job that actually pays your bills, that's more infrastructure than you need for a handful of roles a quarter.
Truffle is a candidate screening platform that combines resume screening, one-way video interviews, and talent assessments, so a capability signal sits next to how a candidate actually communicates and what their resume shows, in one view instead of a separate report you have to interpret yourself. Set up a Personality assessment based on validated Big Five research, a Situational Judgment Test built around how your team handles real scenarios, or an Environment Fit assessment that surfaces whether a candidate's preferences match the reality of the role. AI surfaces the evidence and scores it against the criteria you set. You make the call.
Frequently asked questions
-
Is this the official Predictive Index test?
No. This is an independent practice test built by Truffle to match the publicly documented format of the PI Cognitive Assessment: verbal, numerical, and abstract reasoning, multiple choice, timed. Truffle is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by The Predictive Index, LLC. "Predictive Index" and "PI" are trademarks of their respective owner.
-
What does the real PI Cognitive Assessment measure?
General cognitive ability across the same three areas this practice test covers: verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning, and abstract reasoning. The official assessment is 50 questions in 12 minutes (about 14 seconds per question), with extended-time versions of 18 and 24 minutes available as accommodations. No calculator is allowed.
-
What does Predictive Index cost?
Predictive Index does not publish pricing publicly. You get a quote based on your company size and which parts of the suite you want (the Behavioral Assessment alone versus the full talent optimization platform). Third-party estimates put small-business behavioral-assessment pricing in the low thousands of dollars per year, scaling well into five and six figures for larger organizations. Confirm current pricing directly with Predictive Index.
-
How is the practice test scored, and how does that compare to the real one?
Each question is right or wrong, one point each, out of 18. The real PI Cognitive Assessment produces a single raw score out of 50 that gets converted into a percentile against a norm group, so the scoring mechanics differ. Use this practice test to get comfortable with the question types and the pace, not as a preview of your actual PI score.
-
Is a timed cognitive test a good way to screen candidates?
It's one signal among several, not the whole picture. General cognitive ability tests correlate with job performance across a wide range of roles in decades of research, but a 12-minute timed test under pressure says little about communication, judgment on the job, or how someone actually works. Pair a cognitive measure with structured interviews and role-relevant evidence rather than deciding on a single score.
-
Do you store what I answer?
No. The whole practice test runs in your browser. Your answers and score are never saved or sent anywhere, and refreshing the page clears them. Use the copy button if you want to keep your result.
