Retail inventory specialist job description

The Retail Inventory Specialist is responsible for tracking, auditing, and managing store inventory to ensure accurate stock levels and minimize loss. This entry-level operations role focuses on the data and process side of retail — making sure what's in the system matches what's on the shelf.

Inventory Specialists work closely with store management and the stockroom team to conduct cycle counts, investigate discrepancies, and maintain inventory accuracy. The role is ideal for detail-oriented candidates who are comfortable working with numbers and spreadsheets.

Prior inventory or warehouse experience is helpful but not required. Employers look for candidates with strong organizational skills, accuracy, and the ability to follow established processes consistently.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 0-1 years of experience in inventory management, retail operations, or warehouse work preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy when counting and recording data.
  • Comfortable using inventory management software, scanners, and spreadsheets.
  • Basic math skills and ability to analyze data for discrepancies.
  • Ability to lift and move merchandise and work on your feet during shifts.
  • Reliable, self-directed, and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily, weekly, and monthly inventory cycle counts to verify stock accuracy.
  • Investigate and resolve inventory discrepancies between physical counts and system records.
  • Process incoming shipments, verify quantities, and update inventory management systems.
  • Monitor and report on shrinkage, damage, and loss prevention trends.
  • Maintain accurate records in the inventory management system and generate reports for management.
  • Coordinate with the sales and stockroom teams to ensure product availability on the sales floor.
  • Assist with annual and semi-annual physical inventory counts.
  • Identify slow-moving or excess inventory and recommend markdowns or transfers.
  • Ensure compliance with company inventory policies and standard operating procedures.
