Retail stock associate job description

The Retail Stock Associate is responsible for receiving, organizing, and replenishing merchandise throughout the store. This entry-level role works behind the scenes to make sure products are available on the sales floor, shelves are fully stocked, and the backroom is organized.

Stock Associates typically work early morning or late evening shifts to prepare the store before or after business hours. The role is physically active and ideal for candidates who prefer hands-on work over customer-facing roles.

No prior retail experience is required. Employers look for candidates who are dependable, can lift and carry merchandise, and pay attention to detail when organizing inventory.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 0-1 years of experience in stocking, warehouse, or retail operations preferred.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move merchandise weighing up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Comfortable working on your feet for extended periods in a physically active role.
  • Ability to work early morning, late evening, or overnight shifts as needed.
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality.

    • Responsibilities

  • Receive and unload incoming shipments, verifying quantities against packing slips and purchase orders.
  • Sort, organize, and store merchandise in the stockroom according to category and location.
  • Replenish sales floor displays, shelves, and racks with merchandise throughout the shift.
  • Apply price tags, security tags, and labels to products as needed.
  • Assist with inventory counts and cycle audits to maintain accurate stock levels.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe stockroom and receiving area.
  • Report damaged or defective merchandise and process returns to vendors when directed.
  • Assist with setting up promotional displays and seasonal floor changes.
  • Support the sales team by locating products in the backroom for customers when requested.
