Patient care technician job description

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) provides direct support to patients under the supervision of nurses and other licensed healthcare professionals. This entry-level clinical role involves assisting with daily living activities, monitoring vital signs, and helping patients feel comfortable during their care.

This role is ideal for candidates interested in building a career in healthcare. PCTs gain hands-on clinical experience while working closely with nursing teams in hospitals, clinics, or long-term care facilities.

No prior healthcare experience is required for most positions, though a CNA certification or completion of a PCT training program is preferred. On-the-job training is typically provided.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • CNA certification or completion of a patient care technician training program preferred.
  • 0-1 years of experience in a healthcare or caregiving setting preferred.
  • Ability to lift and move patients safely, with or without assistance.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a compassionate approach to patient care.
  • Reliable attendance and ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • Basic computer skills for electronic documentation.
  • Responsibilities

  • Assist patients with daily living activities including bathing, dressing, grooming, and mobility.
  • Measure and record vital signs such as blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and respiration rate.
  • Help patients with meals, feeding assistance, and fluid intake tracking.
  • Collect specimens and perform basic laboratory tests as directed by nursing staff.
  • Respond to patient call lights and requests in a timely and compassionate manner.
  • Transport patients to and from procedures, tests, and therapy sessions.
  • Maintain a clean and safe patient environment, including changing linens and sanitizing equipment.
  • Document patient care activities and report any changes in patient condition to the supervising nurse.
  • Assist with patient admissions, discharges, and transfers as needed.
