**Outcome.** By the end you'll have a position that checks the must-haves — licence, work authorization, years of experience — before anyone records an interview, with the true dealbreakers blocking automatically and everything else flagged for you to judge.

## Before you start

- A Truffle account. The free trial works. 7 days, 30 credits, no card required.
- A role with real must-haves. Qualification checks earn their keep when a licence, a certification, or work authorization decides whether someone can do the job at all.

## Steps

### 1. Say the must-haves in the role description

Qualification checks are drafted from what you write here, so name the hard requirements plainly: the licence, the work authorization, the years, the weekend availability. Write them the way you'd say them out loud rather than as a keyword list — Truffle turns each one into a question with an answer that passes, and it can only do that for requirements you actually mention.

### 2. Switch on Qualification checks

On **Build position**, switch on **Qualification checks**. It's the only one of the four components with no credit cost — Resume is 1 credit per resume, Video Interview is **5 credits per screening**, and Assessments are 2 credits per candidate, but checks are free. They also can't stand on their own: they run in front of a screening, so at least one of Resume, Video Interview, or Assessments has to be on too.

> Note: If **Next: Configure** stays greyed out, this is why. The footer tells you exactly: "Quals need Resume, Video, or Assessments enabled." Switch one on and the step continues.

### 3. Let Truffle draft the checks

On **Configure screening**, the **Qualification checks** section opens at **Needs input** and offers two ways in: **Generate with AI**, which reads your position details, or **Create your own**. Choosing to generate turns the role's must-haves into checks — each one gets a type and the answer that passes. A licence question becomes **Yes/No** with _Pass: Yes_; years of experience becomes **Numeric** with a threshold like _Pass: Must be greater than or equal to 2_. The section flips to **Ready** when they land.

> Note: This is a draft, not a decision. Every check has an edit and a delete control, you can drag them into order, and **Add a question** puts your own alongside them.

### 4. Decide which ones are dealbreakers

Open a check and you get its **Question type**, its **Required answer**, and a **Required** toggle. Required is the hard one: _"Candidates who fail will be blocked from completing the interview."_ Leave it off and a failing answer is recorded and flagged, but the candidate carries on and you decide what to do with it. Turn it on only for things the role genuinely cannot do without — a licence it's illegal to work without, authorization you can't sponsor around. Free-form questions can't be Required at all, because there's no automatic way to grade open text.

> Note: The distinction is worth getting right. Informational checks cost you nothing but a flag to read. Required checks end someone's application, so the bar is "the role is impossible without this", not "I'd prefer this".

### 5. Review and activate

Move to **Review and activate**. Truffle calibrates the scoring criteria for your interview questions, then shows the whole setup including your qualification checks, with the Required ones marked. Check the list reads the way you meant it — this is the last look before candidates see it — then activate the position.

> Note: Checks run before the interview, so a candidate who fails a Required one never records an answer. That's the point: it saves them the effort and saves you the review.

## FAQ

**Do qualification checks cost credits?**

No. Qualification checks are the only screening component with no credit cost. Resume screening is 1 credit per resume, a video interview is 5 credits per screening, and assessments are 2 credits per candidate — checks are free, and they run in front of whichever of those you're using.

**Can I use qualification checks on their own?**

No. Checks run ahead of a screening rather than being one, so a position needs at least one of Resume, Video Interview, or Assessments switched on as well. The wizard says so directly if you try: "Quals need Resume, Video, or Assessments enabled."

**What's the difference between Required and leaving it off?**

Required is a hard stop — a candidate who fails is blocked from completing the interview, so they never record answers. Leaving it off makes the check informational: the failing answer is recorded and flagged on their profile, they carry on through the rest of the screening, and you decide whether it matters. Use Required only for requirements the role genuinely can't do without.

**Does Truffle write the checks for me?**

It drafts them. Generate with AI reads your position details and proposes checks with a type and a passing answer for each. You edit, reorder, delete, or add your own, and you decide which ones are dealbreakers. Nothing is required until you mark it required.

**What kinds of questions can a qualification check be?**

Four types: Yes/No for binary requirements like a licence or work authorization, Numeric for anything countable with a threshold, Select for a fixed list of acceptable answers, and Free-form for short text you want to read. Free-form can't be marked Required, because open text can't be graded automatically.
