**Outcome.** By the end you'll have a position that runs a validated personality assessment tuned to the work: the traits you care about scored, the ones you don't left alone, and the results sitting alongside everything else you know rather than deciding anything on their own.

## Before you start

- A Truffle account. The free trial works. 7 days, 30 credits, no card required.
- A view on what the work actually demands. The assessment asks you to take positions on five traits, so it helps to have thought about which ones the role really turns on.

## Steps

### 1. Open Assessments and see what's on offer

On **Build position**, switch on **Assessments**. The section expands to show three, each with what it measures and how long it takes a candidate: **Personality** (~4 min) — _"Understand candidates' personality traits and work style using validated workplace research."_; **Work Scenarios** (~5 min) — _"See how candidates would handle real work situations and whether their approach matches your team's style."_; and **Environment Fit** (~4 min) — _"Shows whether candidates prefer the actual work environment and conditions of this position."_

> Note: Opening the section is not the same as choosing an assessment. Until you tick one, the component stays off and **Next: Configure** is disabled with _"Choose at least one to continue."_

### 2. Choose Personality

Tick **Personality**. That's what actually enables the component — the cost summary appears and the step can continue. Assessments don't need anything else switched on, so a position can run an assessment on its own without a resume screen or a video interview.

### 3. Decide how much of the candidate's time you're asking for

On **Configure screening** you pick an **Assessment length**. **Standard** is 50 questions and around 5 minutes — _"More reliable results. Recommended for most roles."_ **Express** is 20 questions and around 2 minutes — _"Faster for candidates. Best for high-volume roles where speed matters."_ It's a straight trade: longer is more reliable, shorter gets finished.

> Note: If you're hiring at volume for an hourly role, Express finishing beats Standard being abandoned halfway.

### 4. Set the five traits — and read the trade-offs

This is the part worth slowing down for. You configure five traits — **Conscientiousness**, **Agreeableness**, **Emotional Stability**, **Extraversion** and **Openness** — and for each one Truffle shows both directions with what each one costs you. Conscientiousness, for instance, offers _"Structured & thorough — careful with process, catches details, follows through"_ against a stated _"Trade-off: May be slower or resist shortcuts"_, or _"Flexible & adaptable — comfortable improvising, moves quickly, pragmatic"_ with _"Trade-off: May miss details or skip steps."_ There is no option marked "best", because there isn't one — there's only what this job needs.

> Note: Two options exist for when you don't have a strong view. **Balanced** — _"Flag extremes in either direction"_ — scores the trait without picking a side. **Not important** — _"Don't score this trait"_ — leaves it out entirely.

### 5. Finish all five, then activate

The counter tracks you: _0 of 5 traits configured_ up to _5 of 5 traits configured_. All five need a selection before you can save, and they can't all be **Not important** — at least one trait has to be scored, or there's no assessment to run. Once the set is complete, move to **Review and activate** and take the position live.

> Note: The result is a signal that sits next to the rest of a candidate's evidence. Truffle never rejects anyone on a personality score, and neither should you on its own.

## FAQ

**Which assessment should I use?**

Personality measures traits and work style using validated workplace research. Work Scenarios shows how someone would handle real situations and whether their approach matches your team. Environment Fit shows whether they'd actually want the conditions the job comes with. They answer different questions, and you can run more than one.

**Is there a best personality profile to hire for?**

No, and Truffle deliberately doesn't offer one. Every trait direction is shown with its own trade-off — being structured and thorough means catching details but possibly resisting shortcuts; being flexible means moving fast but possibly skipping steps. You choose what the work needs.

**What if I don't care about a particular trait?**

Set it to Not important and Truffle won't score it. If you want to know about it without preferring a direction, set it to Balanced, which flags extremes either way. You do have to make a selection on all five, and at least one has to be something other than Not important.

**Should I pick Standard or Express?**

Standard is 50 questions and about 5 minutes, and gives more reliable results. Express is 20 questions and about 2 minutes, and is aimed at high-volume roles where completion matters more than precision. A shorter assessment people finish beats a longer one they abandon.

**Can I run an assessment without a video interview or resume screening?**

Yes. Assessments count as a screening component on their own, so a position can run just an assessment. You can also combine them with resume screening and a one-way interview when you want more signal.
